Article of the Day: Autonomous VW Makes a Mexican Journey

Bringing a bit of much needed good news to the Volkswagen cause, a team from the University of Nevada was able to modify a 2010 Volkswagen Passat wagon (nicknamed 'Autonomous'), to be able to complete the longest-ever driverless journey in Mexico by traveling more than 1,500 miles from the border crossing at Nogales to Mexico City. Of course, the Passat was heavily modified with an array of sensors, cameras, radar, and GPS. Before the journey even started, the team had to create a highly detailed digital map of the route that largely ran along Mexico's Federal Highway 15. The uneventful drive covered between 250 and 300 miles everyday, with a person in the passenger seat and 2 in a car following behind for additional support. What do you think about the future of self-driving cars? Do you want to have one, or is the act of driving something you'd want to keep? Tell us in the comment section below.

Article of the Day: GM to Upgrade American Plants

Today it was announced that GM is committed to spend up to $8.3 billion to upgrade its 12 US plants, in accordance with it's contract with the UAW (United Auto-Workers). Along with improving the plant infrastructure, the union will receive it's first significant wage increases in a decade along with an $8,000 signing bonus to persuade workers to support the package. The union says that the $8.3 Billion would create/retain more than 3,300 jobs. The money includes $1.2 billion for a new paint shop, as well as $1.4 Billion for an expansion of the Arlington, Texas plant. There is also money planned for up to $60,000 in retirement buyouts, to compensate workers who had to previously take concessions over the years. Looks like they are invested heavily in America, which is good news for the auto-industry. What do you think, too much in worker pay and benefits? Tell us in the comment section below.

Article of the Day: The Fight to Repair Your Vehicle

Good news for Gearheads, the US Copyright Office granted an exception in copyright law that permits gearheads and home mechanics to continue repairing and modifying their cars without breaking existing copyright law. To clarify, this ruling concerns the software that modern vehicles use, not the actual hardware. No one is suggesting making it illegal to change your oil or such. The reason that auto-companies opposed this decision has to do with the issue of the software that modern cars use, saying it has become too complex for hobbyists and that errors could lead to safety hazards. But the Copyright Office sided on the side of hobbyists, saying that altering the code on the software was not infringement. There has been some concern that people could tinker with the software to cheat emissions tests (Like some big car company recently...), and that the software wasn't actually 'owned' by customers, just licensed to them. To clarify, this exception is limited only to the actual vehicle owner, not to any third party person or company. What do you think of the ruling, do you think this is a bit futuristic, or should this have been declared a while ago? Tell us in the comment section.

Article of the Day: When To Issue a Recall?

Spurred by the recent news of a more than million vehicle recall for an oil leak that GM just announced, here is an article about how and why a recall may be announced. There are several different types of recalls, most involving safety reasons. If it is that type, then the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can order the manufacturer to recall the vehicle and repair it. But for non-safety issues (Such as paint peeling, seat upholstery coming undone, or cheating on an emissions test...) those can apply even to out of warranty cars. You can also go online to NHTSA's Website to check if your car has a recall on it. Sometimes for the non-safety cars, they won't recall until the company has developed a comprehensive fix yet, like the Volkswagen Diesels, which would be handled by the EPA. A manufacturer could do a voluntary safety recall if they know it will be ordered by the NHTSA, since it will look better press-wise.

Article of the Day: Tesla Building in China

Elon Musk has recently announced that it will produce its version of the Model 3 electric vehicles for the Chinese market in China. They will be working with a China based manufacturer to produce the lower-priced sedan within the country. The Tesla Model 3 would be the upcoming $35,000 version of their electronic vehicles, made for mass market, not just the luxury market. The reason they would be building local for their Chinese Model 3 market is to cut costs in import taxes and to streamline the registration process. All other Tesla Models would be made in the US, even the ones sent overseas, just not China. They are hoping to start production in 2017. Would you buy an affordable Tesla, or do you just think it's all a fad? Tell us your thoughts in the comment section below.

Article of the Day: Huge Mazda Recall

Mazda has confirmed that it is recalling up to 1.37 Million older vehicles for ignition switch shortages, vehicles going as far back as the 1980's. The models include the 90-95 323, 93-98 626,93-95 929, 89-98 MPV, 93-97 MX-6, 92-93 MX-3, and the 90-98 Protégé. Mazda says that over time the grease around the switch's contact points can carbonize and become conductive, which can eventually lead to a short circuit. There have been no accidents, injuries, or fires in the US reported. And once the vehicle is running, the potential fault doesn't affect drivability. The recall will begin in December. Lot of recalls these last few weeks, you'd think they would be more careful. What do you think? Tell us in the comments below.

Article of the Day: Distracted Driving

A new study has suggested that using the voice control system in a vehicle could be as distracting as using a phone during driving. When using a voice-activated system, research shows that drivers' attention stays on the system for about 15 seconds after use for the least complex systems, and nearly double for the most complex. Just because a driver has their hands on the wheel doesn't mean they'll keep their minds on the road. According to University of Utah neuroscientist David Strayer, using a voice-operated system is the mental equivalent of 'balancing a checkbook while driving'. Have you ever used a voice-operated control system? Do you agree with this line of research? Tell us in the comment section below.

Article of the Day: Volvo's Long-Term Plans

Five years after being purchased by Geely, Volvo is on its way to eliminating all remnants of previous owner Ford. The company recently announced its second Volvo-designed modular platform, and that it is fully embracing hybrid and electric powertrains. Michael Fleiss, Volvo's VP of powertrain R&D has stated "All future Volvo products can and will be electrified." Modular architecture is an interesting development, able to produce several different models with the same basic drivetrain, cutting down on production costs. Volvo seems to be fully committed to hybrid and electric technology, expecting that by early 2020, at least 10% of its overall production will be plug-in hybrids. The upcoming XC90 T8 is Volvo's first hybrid that'll be available on American shores. What do you think about the upcoming hybrid revolution? Tell us in the comment section below, and please read the full article, as it has a lot more interesting facts and technical specifications then this summary.

Article of the Day: More DiselGate News, More Engines were Affected

More bad news for Volkswagen, as 3 anonymous insiders have reported to Reuters that the company modified the emissions defeat device to work on at least 4 engines over the 7 years that the company admitted to cheated. If this is true then the cheat suggests strongly that a much larger group of employees made an ongoing effort to continue the deception then Volkswagen says. Volkswagen has repeatedly has denied reports that more than a few managers and upper staff had any knowledge of these devices, but if the Reuters report is true then Volkswagen's claims would be hard to believe. It might also mean a lot more legal trouble for the already troubled company. Do you think that the emissions lying is such a big deal, or was it too much regulation in the first place? Tell us in the comment section below.

Article of the Day : Yet Another GM Recall

GM just issued a statement that it will recall up to 3,300 pickups and SUV's because of a new ignition-switch issue. The affected models are all in the North America market, and are as followsL The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015 Chevy Suburban, Chevy Tahoe, and 2015 model heavy-duty pickups. The issue has been caught quickly, and seems to be a case of the keys getting caught in the 'start' position and then slipping to 'accessory' if bumped, because of the fact that the ignition lock gears have an outer diameter that's larger than allowed. If that happens, the engine shuts off and the driver loses assistance to the steering and brakes. There are no cases of injuries or crashes. The second GM recall in as many weeks, hope this isn't a pattern. Do you own a GM vehicle? What do you think? Tell us in the comments below.

Article of the Day: Tesla's New Auto-Pilot Upgrade

Though not a shockingly new feature, this seems one of the most up to date versions of auto-pilot on the market. Tesla just updated its cars with the 7.0 version, adding in a free auto-pilot feature, which will use the many existing sensors already on the vehicle. This feature includes automatic parallel-parking, the ability to stay in lanes when they curve, automatic braking and steering, and the ability to change lanes automatically by just using the turn signal. Not the most exciting of features, but it is great that the future is coming. And interesting how such a big feature came in a software update, no additional hardware or repair shop visit was needed. Does your car have any auto-pilot systems? What do you think? Tell us in the comments below.

Article of the Day: Toyota's Long Term Green Plan

Toyota is planning to almost ditch solely gasoline powered vehicles entirely by 2050, selling almost entirely hybrids and fuel cell cars to radically reduce emissions. Though electronic cars still weren't part of their vision for the 35 year off goal, striking a contrast with other car companies that are going that route. Toyota's vision might be spurred on by the recent DieselGate scandal by Volkswagen. Toyota's plan is to reduce average emissions from their vehicles by 90% by 2050, compared to 2010 numbers. They project that their annual sales number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is projected to reach more than 30,000 by 2020. But the main part of the vision is hybrid cars, which they predict will reach 15 million. Only a small amount of pure gasoline vehicles will remain, in lesser developed markets. Toyota says that electric vehicles take too long to recharge, restricting them for short-range city travel, which is why they are hesitant to develop them. What do you think about their plan, is being green the most important thing? Tell us in the comments below.

Article of the Day: Volkswagen North American Lead Resigns UPDATE!

Only after 2 weeks, the new Volkswagen head of their North American unit has resigned. Winfried Vahland was, as of 3 weeks ago, CEO of Skoda, Volkswagen's Czech entry-level brand. But of course, DieselGate shook things up and he was appointed chief of the recently created North American Unit. Now there are reports that he has just resigned, citing differences over Volkswagen's U.S. strategy. Nothing more descriptive is known at this point, hopefully there will be more to know soon. What do you think of the whole DieselGate scandal? Tell us in the comments below.

UPDATE: Apparently the main reason that he resigned is that his wife didn't want to move to Virginia for the position, wanting to remain in Europe. Tough break.

Article of the Day: GM has another Recall on the Way

GM is recently recalling 31,685 units of it's 2016 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia because of a short circuit in the windshield wiper that could potentially lead to a fire. GM is asking owners to please not use the wipers until the issue is fixed, if their car has been effected. More specifically, this defect relates to the wiper motor cover not being properly covered, leading to electrical terminals that could touch and cause a short, which would then melt, smoke, or potentially catch fire. GM will have the afflicted cars fixed as soon as possible. I personally have had experience with a defect like this, but in the speakers causing a short. Ever been through a recall? Write in the comments below.

Article of the Day: Lexus To Introduce Self-Driving Features by 2020

Lexus announced that they will have a highway-ready self-driving car on the road by 2020. What that means is that the car would be fully self-driving, but only on highways where it is much more simple and easier to handle. The car would merge, exit, take curves, and overtake slower vehicles, all autonomously. Lexus has already premiered a non-commercial self-driving car at CES, a version of it's 2013 Lexus LS. There would of course be a button in order to take manual control on the highway. Lexus is currently testing out this technology, their Automated Highway Driving Assist, in Japan. Lexus currently has no plans for a full version self-driving car, only this Highway Driving Assist feature. Would you like to just sleep on the highway and wake up in a new city, have your car drive you there? Or do you think you'd rather drive yourself? Write in the comments below.

Article of the Day: Driver-less Cars Accidents

The California DMV has just released all of its driverless car accident reports online. No fatalities or major accidents were shown to have occurred, but still a number of fender-benders. All apparently with human-error to blame, as it is shown that the main cause in the accidents seems to be that driverless cars are overly cautious. Though it sounds like a good thing, it could lead to some issues, where human drivers expect a more aggressive and fast driver, accidents could occur because of it. For example, one driverless Google car was rear-ended at a traffic light. The driverless car was creeping forward but abruptly stopped when it noticed another car behind it. What do you think, should they be made more aggressive, or would that cause more problems than it solves? Write in the comments below.

Article of the Day: New 'Top Gear' is Starting to Film

Happy news today, as Top Gear is starting to film again today, with all 3 co-hosts and a whole mess of staff filming for Amazon Prime. Though the name of the show is not officially revealed, most likely it will end up being 'Gear Knobs', as was reported earlier on this blog. They begin filming with a Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari LaFerrari, and a McLaren P1. The reason that they got kickd off of the BBC in the first place is because of a feud between one of the co-hosts, Jeremy Clarkson, and one of the staff. What do you think of the news, think it'll be as good as the old show? Write in the comments below.

Article of the Day: China's Super Sized Traffic Jams

We all know that China is home to the biggest population of people in the world (Fun fact: There are more English speakers in China than in USA), but with all that population the traffic suffers tremendously. There have been jams known to last days, and with all the smog and noxious air, the traffic jams aren't helping. This one was caused by an apparent checkpoint after a row of tow booths, right outside Beijing, on a massive road with no clear lanes. Have you ever been to China? Any experiences with the traffic there? Let us know in the comments below. Check out the video and enjoy!
