Article of the Day: Milan Banning Cars

Milan, Italy has started to ban cars and motorcycles from the city center for the first 3 days of the week because of excessive air pollution. This is not the first time that Milan has had to do this, as they are in a valley and as such certain weather patterns get congested there, as well as the fact that there hasn't been any rain for 7 weeks and little wind to push the pollution away for the last 50 days. From 10am to 4pm until Wednesday, December 30th, the city center is a no-go for most motorized transport. Rome is in much the same position, as it has banned most vehicles in the city's green zone for 9 hours on Monday, and again 9 hours on Tuesday based on license plate number. These cities are trying to get people to embrace public transportation, to alleviate the pollution problem. Italy, and Milan in particular, is one of the worst in the region for pollution issues. What do you think of this, and other cities, banning cars due to climate change/pollution issues?

Article of the Day: Transforming Ford Motorcycle

This is an interesting one. Ford has recently filed a patent that would allow for drivers to remove the rear wheel of a passenger car so that it could be used as an over-sized unicycle. This filing was made in June but only recently published, and describes a 'self-propelled unicycle' that can 'selectively disengaged with the vehicle for independent use'. The 'unicycle' is powered by an electric motor. It's assumed this is for times when a car would break down and someone needs to go for help, gas. Or perhaps if you are in a parking spot a mile away from your work. What do you think, is this just Ford trying to patent something so other companies can't do it, or will this be in the 2022 S550?

Article of the Day: Tesla Autonomous Cars

Elon Musk, known dreamer and futurist, has updated his prediction of a fully autonomous Tesla from five years away to two years away. Though he has given other outlandish predictions, such as some pertaining to his company Space X, and he believes that human drivers will be outlawed within 15 years or so, so take this prediction with a grain of salt. Musk feels that the autonomous driving technical challenge is a lot easier than most of us think. He also believes that the recent George Hotz, who alleged to have created a fully autonomous car all on his own, isn't telling the truth about that as well. Though Musk himself may be a bit of a dreamer, it's very interesting that he believes that his company will be able to put out a fully autonomous car within 2 years. They have recently introduced an update to their Model S vehicles that enables fully autonomous highway driving, so they do have experience in that field. Do you think this is just idle boasting, or a serious declaration? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

Article of the Day: Nevada is Ground Zero for EV's

The sunny state of Nevada has just approved a $335 Million incentives package for Faraday Future, a Chinese Electric Car star-up backed by Chinese billionaire Jia Yueting, wanting to bring an EV to showrooms by 2017. After being rejected in states like California, Georgia, and Louisiana, Faraday is spending $1 Billion on a North Las Vegas factory, which the founder says can bring up to 4,500 jobs. The state is also hosting a battery manufacturing plant by Tesla, luring it in by offering $1.25 Billion in tax incentives, zero sales tax for 20 years, no payroll tax for 10 years, as well as other incentives. The Tesla plant would be completed by late 2020, worth $5 Billion dollars, one of the world's largest buildings. Nevada seems ready to enter into the world of electronic vehicles, and willing to give incentives in order to secure future jobs and income as well. What do you think of the deal between Faraday, Tesla, and the state of Nevada?

Article of the Day: VW Taking out Multi-Billion Dollar Loan

Volkswagen is set to take out a 20 Billion Euro ($21 Billion) loan in order to help out with the emissions scandal. The automaker will spread out the debt among several banks, and will start to pay back the banks as soon as Spring 2016. The banks may charge up to $160 million in fees as well. VW applied for these loans weeks ago in order to cushion the expected amount of fines from the scandal, but the situation has worsened since. In addition to the loans, VW continues to search internally for money, by reducing the R&D budget by the equivalent of $1.1 billion in 2016, and they might close the Phaeton's factory in Dresden, Germany. They do want to keep jobs safe though. Overall, the scandal could end up costing VW up to $82.5 Billion, according to a Credit Suisse estimate.

Article of the Day:Teens are Still Bad Drivers

Even though fatalities among teen drivers are at the lowest point in decades, a new study shows that they still aren't good drivers. After an intense group of surveys, it is shown that 89% of teens consider themselves safe drivers, but among this group 71% of them admit to speeding. After a year or longer on the road, 47% report going too fast, versus 28% who have been on the road only 6 months or so. Also, a survey of 1,000 parents showed that only 38% of them thought that their kids sped. Some other scary statistics are 36% of teens admitting to driving aggresively, 31% of them reported road rage as well. The biggest tools to combat these hazards are parental guidance and experience, reports the study by Liberty Mutual Insurance and Students Against Destructive Decisions. What do you think, were you a bad driver as a teen? Tell us in the comments below.

Article of the Day: Volkswagen Sales Report

In November, Volkswagen sales have plunged nearly 25% overall in the United States, according to a report Tuesday morning, though overall industry sales have sky-rocketed. Volkswagen sales have fallen 24.7% overall, as well as a 60%  decline in the flagship Passat sedan. The Volkswagen Golf, highly acclaimed and critically praised, fell 64%. Obviously the cheating scandal 'DieselGate' had a lot to do with the fall in sales, though it wasn't just diesel VW's that were affected. As well as the fact that on November 2nd, the EPA gave VW, Audi, and Porsche a second Notice of Violations. Though the other brands have not been affected by it. Though the scandel might not have been the only reason sales fell, as VW has been selling a lot of older-model cars that haven't been competitive as of late, as well as the stop-sale on certain models that VW put into effect. Globally, Volkswagen sales declined 3.5% in October. No Global sales numbers are available yet for November. Hope you've sold your VW stock by now!

Article of the Day: Autonomous VW Makes a Mexican Journey

Bringing a bit of much needed good news to the Volkswagen cause, a team from the University of Nevada was able to modify a 2010 Volkswagen Passat wagon (nicknamed 'Autonomous'), to be able to complete the longest-ever driverless journey in Mexico by traveling more than 1,500 miles from the border crossing at Nogales to Mexico City. Of course, the Passat was heavily modified with an array of sensors, cameras, radar, and GPS. Before the journey even started, the team had to create a highly detailed digital map of the route that largely ran along Mexico's Federal Highway 15. The uneventful drive covered between 250 and 300 miles everyday, with a person in the passenger seat and 2 in a car following behind for additional support. What do you think about the future of self-driving cars? Do you want to have one, or is the act of driving something you'd want to keep? Tell us in the comment section below.

Article of the Day: The Fight to Repair Your Vehicle

Good news for Gearheads, the US Copyright Office granted an exception in copyright law that permits gearheads and home mechanics to continue repairing and modifying their cars without breaking existing copyright law. To clarify, this ruling concerns the software that modern vehicles use, not the actual hardware. No one is suggesting making it illegal to change your oil or such. The reason that auto-companies opposed this decision has to do with the issue of the software that modern cars use, saying it has become too complex for hobbyists and that errors could lead to safety hazards. But the Copyright Office sided on the side of hobbyists, saying that altering the code on the software was not infringement. There has been some concern that people could tinker with the software to cheat emissions tests (Like some big car company recently...), and that the software wasn't actually 'owned' by customers, just licensed to them. To clarify, this exception is limited only to the actual vehicle owner, not to any third party person or company. What do you think of the ruling, do you think this is a bit futuristic, or should this have been declared a while ago? Tell us in the comment section.

Article of the Day: When To Issue a Recall?

Spurred by the recent news of a more than million vehicle recall for an oil leak that GM just announced, here is an article about how and why a recall may be announced. There are several different types of recalls, most involving safety reasons. If it is that type, then the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can order the manufacturer to recall the vehicle and repair it. But for non-safety issues (Such as paint peeling, seat upholstery coming undone, or cheating on an emissions test...) those can apply even to out of warranty cars. You can also go online to NHTSA's Website to check if your car has a recall on it. Sometimes for the non-safety cars, they won't recall until the company has developed a comprehensive fix yet, like the Volkswagen Diesels, which would be handled by the EPA. A manufacturer could do a voluntary safety recall if they know it will be ordered by the NHTSA, since it will look better press-wise.
