Article of the Day: Tesla Model X Mileage

One of my favorite topics in automobile news, electric cars, More specifically, the unique example of Tesla, and their new 2016 Model X, which is set to debut in California tonight. But just ahead of the official announcment were a set of release on the EPA's website, here. That links to the 2016 Tesla Model X AWD 90D, which is shown to have a range of up to 257 miles. The faster version, which can go 0-60 in 3.3 seconds, drops that number down to 250 miles. Which compared to normal cars may not be that good, but the fact that you can charge your car in your home while you sleep, or for free at one of the numerous charging stations world-wide certainly makes up for it. What do you think about the new Model X, or Tesla in general? Write in the comment section below.

Article of the Day: Car to Car Video

Google has recently patented a way of having cars able to 'see' from the viewpoint of other cars. Basically each car would be equipped with a front-facing camera and a radar transmitter. For example, a car can come across an obstruction in the road, perhaps a huge tree branch. Then the car can automatically record as it happens, tag it with descriptive metadata, and send it to all other equipped cars in the area to view, most likely on the center console. Thus the drivers would be aware of the danger and know to slow down, or possibly take an alternate route. This technology could also be used for passing on a two-lane road, to be able to see what is ahead. What do you think about this, would you have it as an option? Write in the comments below.

Volkswagen will recall all 11 Million diesel cars effected by the purposefully corrupted emissions testing software. This number not only includes Volkswagen cars, but all Audis, Skodas, Seats, and assorted light commercial vehicles that were all affected. Article of the Day: Audi Involved in DieselGate

Apparently the software used to cheat at diesel emmisions tests weren't just confined to the parent company Volkswagen. Audi is now reporting that over 2.1M Audi vehicles worldwide are also affected, so far bringing the total up to 13.1M vehicles, as Volkswagen has also recently reported 11M vehicles containing the cheating software. Audi has said that this includes up to 1.42 Million in western Europe, including 557,000 in Germany. Around 13-14,000, and another 1,500 in Canada. Does this make you not trust diesel cars, or just Volkswagen and it's subsidiaries? Write in the comments below.

Article of the Day: The Worlds First 1000 Mph Car

Coming in at around 13.5 meters in length, weighing 7.5 tons, and intended to reach speeds of over 1,000 mph, the Bloodhound SSC is certainly a marvel of engineering. Created by a team of British engineers who previously designed a car (Thrust SSC) that hit 763 mph.The car will try and make this attempt next year in the Hakskeen Pan desert of South Africa. Full of Formula 1 and aerospace experts, they go into full detail about what makes this car roll. According to their Engineering Lead, Mark Elvin, the wheels were the most difficult aspect of the car. In order to withstand the 50,000Gs that would be exerted on the wheels during full speed, they had to create them from a long thin cylinder of aluminum, squashed flat into a pancake. The tail fins were a difficult bit as well, as they provide the much needed stability to the car, and there were serious concerns of the car liftin up into the air during top speeds. The engine(s) are massive. A Rolls Royce EJ200 jet engine, and a Nammo Hybrid rocket engine, as well as a Jaguar V8 in order to pump the oxidizer required for the rocket engine. All encased in a hard titanium shell. It's quite impressive. What do you think about driving 1000 mph? How would you feel? Write in the comment section below.

Article of the Day: Cadillac Recall

Not as huge as the Volkswagen recall, but certainly nothing to scoff at. Cadillac is recalling 119,339 units (96,145 being in the US) of the 2013-2016 ATS sedan. The reason being that the coil antenna module that powers the rear defogger has been found to overheat. This has currently lead to four fires, but no injuries, fatalities or crashes thankfully. Apparently the reason behind this is that during production the antenna might have been produced with 'critically weak terminal connectivity', which could lead to the overheating issue leading to the recall. Though if you have the car, no real reason to be worried, as it is thought that less than 1% of the recalled cars would be affected. Are you affected by this recall? Or have you ever been affected by any recall? Write in the comments and share your stories.

DieselGate Special Report: A Long Time Coming

After news of Prof. Winterkorn's resignation as CEO, Volkswagen still stresses that he had no knowledge of the scam now known as DieselGate. But according to German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel, that might be true. He alleges that the decision to install the 'defeat devices' in the current line of TDI Diesel cars (And maybe other Diesel cars, as news develops), was made before he moved from the head of Audi to Volkswagen, in 2007 as evidenced in theis quote from a Reuters interview “I have great respect for his decision. He is taking responsibility for something that happened when he was not chief executive of Volkswagen but rather at Audi,”. So, this has been in the works for a while, since the only cars (so far) affected are from 2009. Just to show how long in the making this scam has been. What do you think of Dieselgate? Write in the comments below.

Article of the Day: 9 best Driving Smartphone Apps.

Now, it isn't ok to text and drive. But if you're at a pit stop or right before a road trip or such, or have someone that can use the phone while driving, then these are the best apps for you to use.
  1. Google Maps is at the top, of course. Best for directions and time estimates.
  2. Waze is a helpful alternative for traffic navigation, showing a lot of hazards that Google doesn't, such as accidents, speed traps, etc..(And they were just purchased by Google).
  3. RoadTrippers is great for planning an extensive road trip, giving reviews about various hotels, gas stations, and information about expected gas usage.
  4. SpotHero is an interesting one, basically if you are in an unfamiliar area and need a quick parking spot, you can reserve and pay for a spot all on your phone. Currently in 12 major US Cities.
  5. RepairPal is an estimator for repairs, in order to not get scammed at an unfamiliar repair center. You tell it what model car you have, the issue, and it'll give you the average repair cost and a mechanic nearby.
  6. Automatic is technically not an app, but a dongle that plugs into your vehicle's diagnostic port and stays there, unseen. Once set up, it has plenty of apps that can be used with it in order to give you information about engine health, gas mileage, performance, and to automatically alert emergency services if you've been in an accident. The dongle costs $100, most of the apps that support it are free.
  7. GasBuddy is a simple app for finding the lowest gas nearest you, with nearly every gas station in the US in its database, as well as numerous user reviews and updates.
  8. PlugShare is basically essential if you are one of the lucky few to own a compatible electric car. Showing you all of the public charging stations near you, and can even tell you which ones are full or not.
  9. Last but not least, XLR8. A silly little app that can transform the sound of your hybrid or electric car into a powerful V-8 Muscle Car, or a NASCAR of your choice. Just connect to your cars stereo.
What do you think, will you be downloading any of these apps today? If you already have, why not leave a review or thoughts about them in the comments?

Article of the Day: Volvo Wants to Automate Garbage Pickup

Shrot fun article for today. Apparently Volvo is partnering with universities and multiple waste management firms in order to create ROAR (Robot Based Autonomous Refuse-handling). It is being described as a project that aims to create a sort of robot workforce that would go out, take the garbage, and dump it into the trunk. All under the eye of a human that is seated comfortably in the truck itself. What do you think about this. Do you think robots will take over our jobs? Write in the comment section below.

Article of the Day: Volkswagen Knowingly Cheated EPA Testing

Quite the bombshell of a news story here, leading Volkswagen to recall close to a half-million diesel cars on grounds of tampering with the testing equipment. The recall would affect 4-cylinder Volkswagen and Audi vehicles from model years 2009-15. The exact aspect of the deceit involves a piece of hidden software in the cars that would detect when the periodic EPA emissions testing were occurring, and then for the duration of the test the cars' full emissions control systems are turned on, which are normally turned off. During normal times, the cars push out as much as 40x as much pollution (nitrogen oxide) is allowed under the Clean Air Act. Excess nitrogen oxide in the atmosphere has been linked to smog, which can lead to asthma attacks, other respiratory issues, and in extreme cases premature death. Experts in the automotive field say that turning the control systems off yielded better performance, torque, acceleration. Over the next year the owners of the affected vehicles should be notified about the recall, with ways of getting the free repairs. President Obama issued the order to recall those cars, and under the terms of the Clean Air Act, the Justice Dept. could potentially issue fines of up to $37.5k per vehicle, which would amount to $18billion. There is more background info and such on the New York Times Article, which I highly recommend as further reading.

Article of the Day: Detroit Cars Headed Overseas

I've seen a bunch of commercials about the Chrysler cars being produced, made, engineered
and such in Detroit, as a point of pride. Though according to a new trade agreement between Fiat Chrysler and the UAW (United Auto Workers) which would move the production of Chrysler 200's from Sterling Heights  Detroit over to a production plant in Toluca, Mexico. Other car productions would be shifted around as well, such as the Ram 1500 moving production locations from Warren Truck to Sterling Heights, both still in Michigan. What do you think of the change, should they stay in detroit or does it make sense because of the low cost of wages over in Mexico? Write in the comment section below.

Article of the Day: The Battle to Service our Cars

This topic has been gaining more and more traction over the last year or so, and it's all about whether we should legally have the right to service and modify our own cars. The arguement from the car sellers and manufacterers basically has to do with copyright issues, more specifically about the computer system that is in every new (and a lot of used) cars out there. Since the computer systems are the property of the manufacterors, and would be very simple to 'hack' into and corrupt (with disassterious affects on not just your own car), they want to limit the access that the owners would have to those systems and to the car itself. Personally I think that there has been a lot of fuss and worry from companies over copyright issues (See the TPP for more of that!) but the fact remains that tampering with the computer systems in these cars can lead to viruses and accidents galore. Though, cutting a brake line will lead to disaster and you were still able to work on your brakes back before computers... What do you think? Write in the comments below! Or if you have no idea what I said and need to read the actual full article, as always, click the link below.

Article of the Day: Top Ten Car Technologies from Space Exploration

Bit confusing title, but this article is all about the coolest car technologies and inventions that came from space exploration. Very interesting field of study, so many technological advancements have came because of Nasa and such. Not just space shuttles and cool helmets! Some of the things that space exploration has invented and are now used for cars include fuel cells, flame retardent fabric (For Nascar suits and etc..), carbon fiber for the shells and frame, gold foil heat shields for the McLaren F1 engine (the gold foil stuff was used most famously for the moon landers). Even the cool heads up display technology that is recently making it's way to cars now is from space exploration, originally from fighter jets. But the biggest one that I'm sure you've all used is GPS, originally developed solely by the United States for the Air Force, was developed using satellites via the space program. Neat stuff, be sure to check out the whole list and all the details in the link below. What do you think the next big car technology will be? Write in the comment section below.

That started in "Goldfinger", with a pop-out machine gun in the bumper, and a rear bullet shield. Other interesting gadgets include a Lotus Espirt S1 that transforms to a submarine from "The Spy who Loved Me" (Which Elon Musk of Tesla, Paypal, actually owns, and wants to transform for real), and a gyrocopter from "You Only Live Twice". All the way up to the modern series of films. What's your favorite Bond film? Write in the comments below. For all sorts of pictures (And you do want to see all the pictures!) Article of the Day: License Flipper gets Caught

A fun little news story for you all today. Up north in Canada, a man had his Geo Metro confiscated by the local police. The crime? Toll Evasion. By sheer luck, a police officer happened to see the car without a valid license plate as it went over the bridge, then a license plate slid onto the back after the toll area (They use cameras to find the license plates and send the toll to them that way). He got caught, faces $5000 in fines and had the car taken away. What do you think, a bit harsh of a punishment or what he deserved for not paying tolls? Write in the comments below.

Article of the Day: Toyota Entering 'Intelligent' Car Market

Interesting new development in my favorite car topic: Self-driving or 'Intelligent' cars, as Toyota puts it. In this new article, Toyota plans to commit $50 million to researching the robotics and A.I. needed to make 'intelligent' cars. They didn't call them self-driving cars, rather said they are planning on using the money and research in developing A.I. to help drivers, not replace them. Features such as more advanced pedestrian/bike warnings that already exist could turn into features that move your car out of their way or prevent you from moving into them. The head of the project also says that he wants to keep human drivers in the loop, make sure driving remains fun, just use A.I. to prevent people from making mistakes. What do you think, would you rather a self-driving car or one that prevents you from going too fast, running into people, etc...? Write your answer in the comment section.

One of the reason being that cars depreciate in value fairly quickly, so a luxury car from even just 2-3 years ago is extremely affordable today. Reason number 2 being that the cars are designed for normal people's wear and tear, designed to be a great used car and keep on going. A used luxury car is also more likely to be safer than even a new regular car. And last but not least, even with repairs and all it is more likely to be cheaper than buying a new regular car. So why not go to The European Masters in Great Neck and schedule a test drive?

Article of the Day: Dealer tricked GM out of Billions

This one is quite an interesting read. A local story taking place in Port Jefferson. To make a long and intriguing story a bit short, basically this local dealer went to GMAC (General Motors Acceptance Corporation) for $6 Billion in financing to finance 247k vans that he bought from a different dealership and would sell across the world. The only issue is that the vans, the dealership, etc... didn't exist. He supplied GMAC with fake Vins bought from a fake company, get financing from GMAC, 'sell' them to a different fake company, and keep all the financing money for himself. At a profit at about $25k a van (Remember, the vans don't actually exsist). This McNamara fellow plead guilty in Sept 1992 after 11 years of scamming. Approximately $6 Billion dollars was transfered over those years to McNamara. His whereabouts are unknown now, as he was let free and able to keep millions of dollars from the scheme. Quite the crazy tale. What do you think about it all, write in the comments! Be sure to read the full article for a better explained story, much more details. You don't be disappointed.
